About

Between the Barndoors is an engineering blog by Lumafield. From hardware to software and from AWS infrastructure to WebGL shaders, this blog explores exciting technical problems behind building industrial computed tomography (CT) scanners and a cloud-native application for visualizing & analyzing the rich volumetric data they produce.

What does "between the barndoors" mean?

One of the most beloved controls in Voyager is the attenuation range map, which allows users to isolate specific attenuation ranges to visualize when viewing a scan.

The Voyager attenuation range map

We call the green rectangles on either side of the histogram the "barndoors". So the portion of the histogram "between the barndoors" is the volume that is being examined. Just like adjusting the barndoors on a scan in Voyager, the posts on this blog aim to dial in on specific, interesting areas of Lumafield technology to bring out insights that would otherwise go unseen.
